Publishers’ Note: February 2016

American Sportfishing Association

The future of fishing, rocking the shows and more ….

As publishers of a national magazine on fishing, our inboxes and mailboxes are often crammed with press-releases masking as news stories (you don’t see them here so you know where those go) and even surveys which –lo and behold – lead the innocent reader to the check-out aisle for something you never know you needed. And the survey says, “Anglers catch bigger fish with a shot of ‘lure sparkle,’ get your free sample for only $12.95 in postage and handling.”

But when we get surveys and data from the American Sportfishing Association and other hard-working trade groups we get excited. Most of us were introduced to fishing as a child, someone we love (d) fished, and our sense of self gets deeply wrapped up with the sea or body of water we fish in. Many of us who watch the industry closely know a few more things that give us pause: Fishing as a sport is graying. The vitality of the industry depends on bringing in more women and children, as well as folks from urban areas who are all under-represented in the sport. The most recent survey by the American Sportfishing Association sheds light on these is- sues and more – check out our article in this issue.

And please join us in thanking Steve Madeiros and his Rhode Island Saltwater Angler’s Association which produces the best, if not the biggest, fishing show in the country. Steve and his band of volunteers do their part and more to bring the love of fishing to all the groups mentioned above and more. They truly foster and nurture the sport. Be sure to attend the New England Fishing Show February 28 in Providence. Note that Sunday is family day – women and children are free. Just one more way the crew at RISAA walks the walk to share the love of fishing with women and children.

February also brings more boat shows in Long Island, Rhode Island and throughout the region. Wendy Mackie and her tireless team of your own Rhode Island Marine Trade Association offer bigger, better and more opportunities to find that perfect boat, upgrade your gear, check out a bad-ass fishing seminar by Capt. Jack Sprengle and crew, and even land a fish on the Coastal Angler Fish Simulator! Check it out February 4-7 in Providence.

And spring is coming! So just in time here is our latest promotion!

Six time (March – August) advertisers will receive free banner advertising for the whole season on our website, on Zach’s weekly fishing reports page which starts in the spring. This is the page folks download and take with them, the page avid anglers can’t do without. These banners are usually $100 a pop so it is a great deal! Call us with any questions or for a proposal today! This offer is limited to the first 10 advertisers who sign up so don’t miss it!
