To Our Readers

As we go to press it’s a beautiful day with temps in the 50’s and smooth seas. We are headed out for what may be the last trip for tautog before we pull the boat. While November delivered the ‘tog, we are moving toward the inevitable – when cod is the order of the day. Unlike so many of our charter captain friends who are making plans to take their businesses south for the winter, we are hunkering down.

The holidays will flash by at warp speed, and then what? We are humble publishers. There is no shiny Regulator in our near future, but we love to go to the boat shows and dream. We check out the new products and, if we are lucky, walk away with something cool like a Ted Zack rod or some swanky Deep Ocean gear and new cup-holders.

Providence Boast Show January 31 – February 2 2014

This year we are especially thrilled to be teaming up with our friends at RIMTA to produce the official Providence Boat Show Guide. As we shared in earlier issues, RIMTA has acquired the PBS and is already hard at work to put it on the map as the premier show in the region.

Yeah, yeah, we’ve heard the complaints that the show has faded in recent years. Well, if anyone can turn it around it is the hardworking, talented folks at RIMTA. They represent the full spectrum of all of us in the marine industry: the boaters, sailors, anglers, boat builders, marinas, and all of those, who care for all of us, who love and enjoy the coast and surrounding waters.

And they are off to an excellent start by recruiting Captain Jack Sprengler to give input on what the fishing community would find interesting and want to see. Nothing Captain Jack ever does is boring.

We’ll do our part. Over the next few months – while all but the cod elude us – we’ll offer up some space to take a deeper dive into the marine industry in Rhode Island. Zach Harvey will take some precious time to look at jobs in the marine industry in Rhode Island – what does it take to get one? To keep one? What resources are there on a local and state level to help you if you are looking for one?

And watch out for our launch of Boldwater TV in Rhode Island, bringing your favorite fishing and saltwater coverage to your favorite watering hole. Starting with Narragansett. More to come.

Also, we are full speed ahead for the launch of Coastal Angler Magazine Long Island. We will start with a launch distribution of 10,000 but have short term goals to double that, hopefully by summer 2014. Zack Harvey will have oversight and contributions. While Zack knows Long Island waters well, we will increase his fire power with input from the greats like Capt. Michael Potts and others.

I hear from the corporate folks in Florida that 2 new regions will get their own Coastal Angler Magazine in March; central and southern New Jersey. If my math is right, that will bring the national distribution of Coastal Angler magazines to 600,000! Wow!

This will also give our advertisers powerful new regional and national platforms. We had a meeting with one of our advertisers last week, one whom I consider particularly savvy. He is really excited that by March our regional platform will offer a new, combined circulation of 70,000 with no rate increase! We will now have circulation of 10,000 each in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Long Island, along with 20,000 each in Massachusetts and New Jersey.
