Tips For Catch-And-Release Flounder

While targeting flounder, I generally pause after I feel the initial strike. I do this for a few reasons. Flounder hold their prey in locked jaws for a period of time in order to kill the bait and reposition it before swallowing. I don’t get as many hook-ups when setting the hook on the first thump of a flounder strike.Oct 7th, 2022

The Language Of Anglers

Anglers have their own languages. We make up words or phrases to describe situations we frequently encounter on the water. Some of these phrases are quite amusing, and some are too colorful to be used in print or online. Like regional dialects, they vary from location to location and even from boat to boat. Streamers For Fall Trophy Browns

Hunting a trophy brown trout is what fall is all about. These fish can be caught nymphing a big stonefly or drifting an October caddis, but the old adage, “big bait, big fish,” holds true. Streamer fishing is a surefire way to try and target these old brutes. Oct 4th, 2022

When Temps Cool Down, The Grouper Bite Heats Up

This is time of year I live for. You see, I’ve been watching this beautiful cycle happen with grouper for almost four decades now. As soon as the mullet run slows, and the vast schools of cigar minnows (cigs) and sardines drift inshore, so do the larger (male) gag grouper. Oct 3rd, 2022

Smokin’ Hot Action In Costa Rica

Some folks plan their Costa Rica fishing trip months in advance, but others walk into the office on a whim and book a trip for that day, as did angler Bradley Goss. Capt. Alex on the Harvester delivered the goods for this Oklahoma angler in the form of a 190-pound yellowfin tuna.Sep 30th, 2022

Albies at Close Quarters

I’ve fished the Shinnecock Inlet in Hampton Bays, NY for many years and have usually found plenty of striped bass and bluefish there to keep me occupied. One afternoon last September, I pulled into the parking lot on the inlet’s west side, took a look at the water and smiled as I saw a large school of bait flashing on the surface. Something, or a lot of somethings were feeding on them.Sep 27th, 2022

Bucket List: Bow River Bullets

Without a doubt, Alberta, Canada’s Bow River is a world-class trout fishery. Glacier-fed and flowing more than 350 miles from the Canadian Rockies through the foothills and prairies of Alberta, it is big and scenic by the time it reaches the 50-mile section southeast of Calgary that author Jim McLennan called “the Blue Ribbon Bow.” It is here in this blue ribbon stretch that anglers flock to get in on some of the best brown and rainbow trout fishing in the world.

Endless Fishing Opportunities in Marathon

Marathon, the very heart of the Florida Keys, offers fishing options as vast as the crystal blue waters that surround the islands.

Under The Sea – Slings and Polearms

There’s a retro-movement taking place—a trend toward primitive hunting gear. Slings and polespears are used in places that do not allow trigger mechanisms.

Lake Erie’s Big Brown Bass

Lake Erie boasts some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the world. On this massive lake, the Eastern Basin offers a stellar habitat for bronzebacks.

The Freeport Meat Run – an Annual Trip of a Lifetime

Team Finster fishes top tournaments, but one of the highlights of their fishing year is an annual spring meat trip for big yellowfin tuna in the Bahamas.

Shallow Water Vibration

A lipless crankbait is one of the most effective baits to catch fish in shallow water, and it’s definitively one of those I use often.
