W e are psyched, again. Waters are warming, boats are in the water and after a brutal winter we are finally gearing up for summer.
And Boldwater TV is here! Two of our favorite watering holes, the Bon Vue/ Hammerhead Grill and Rhody Joes are all plugged in and ready to hit the switch. By the time you read this you will be able to head to either favorite watering hole for a cold one and high impact water- sports â fishing, surfing, kit-boarding and more from around the world and here in Rhode Island. Working with our own Don Coyne (formerly of Discovery Channelâs âFishing the Ocean Stateâ) we are on a mission to bring this closed cir- cuit, custom TV show to watering holes, marinas and ferries throughout the state. Today the Bon Vue and Rhody Joes, to- morrow 3 other legendary watering holes in South County who have given thumbs up and are in process, the rest of Rhode Island after that. If youâre hankering for Fluke donât miss the largest fluke tourney in the country, the aptly named âFluke Til Ya Pukeâ tournament in South Kingstown, Rhode Island on June 14. Help usher in Fatherâs Day by bringing dad down for an afternoon of family fun. FTYP is one of the largest fluke tournaments in the country with huge purses and fun. Bring the family and enjoy the weigh in, the great BBQ, music and a good time!
Gotta give the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglerâs Association and their hardwork- ing President Steve Medieros a shout out for their annual âTake a Kid Fishing Dayâ Which also takes place this month. The charter guys and RISAA volunteers show out in force to provide a wonderful morn- ing of fishing for underprivileged kids.
The fun continues at the end of the month with the 7th annual Doormat Derby, hosted by our friends at Snug Har- bor in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Donât miss their aptly named Golfersâ Award â legal limit non-game fish or other ugly fish are all eligible for this award to âchallenged anglers.â
And July brings the great shark tournaments to the region â check out the Monster Shark Tournament which moved from Oaks Bluffs to Newport July 17 – 19. This nationally recognized event, in memory of the late Steven James, is the real deal. From all of the great marine research benefits of the event, to the Bare Naked Ladies playing at the Newport Pier and the $20,000 purse. Fish it if you can, but be sure to stop in.
