Publisher’s Note: Sept. 2015

Crazy for Porgies, Salmon Fishing in Alaska, and more…

pubs-note

July and August have flown by. Mike is now rocking a new set of hips (we call
him Lee Majors), our second daughter is happily married to a great guy (we’ve moved from the “Brady Bunch” to “Eight is Enough” with two awesome new sons in law) and our fishing travels have ranged from home-base to salmon fishing in Alaska and freshwater fishing in Maine. We love our jobs, this is what you call a great day in the office!

“This has been a very strange year… Even the crustiest old salts who are most set in their ways have been scratching their heads and trying to figure out how any of what’s going on relates to what they’ve seen or caught for so many seasons” – Sam Toland, Sam’s Bait and Tackle, Middletown.

Has it been as weird a fishing season for you as it has been for us? Fish don’t seem to be where they should be, or they are where they shouldn’t be in Rhody waters. One good thing is that folks seem to be rediscovering our perennial favorite, scup. Even the charter guys are finally showing the love for this tasty, sustainable fish! Check our website for yummy recipes for this unappreciated delicacy. Check out Zach Harvey’s 8/14 fishing report for more details on what’s been happening at coastalanglermag.com/rhodeisland/ri-fishing-report8142015 .

Big game fishing is in full gear and they are bringing in swordfish. Check out our recipe for swordfish bruschetta in this issue. If you want to make an expensive fish serve many without compromising flavor or quantity this recipe is for you.

Alaska has been on our bucket list for a while with world-class fishing and pristine waters far from the hustle and bustle of the lower 48. A last minute deal and post daughter’s-wedding exhaustion combined to allow for a quick trip in early August. While we were initially concerned about booking a bucket list fishing trip through a cruise line (Norwegian which we usually love) it was beyond expectation – read on for more.

September is a bittersweet month for Rhode Island. Arguably the best of everything coastal; fishing off of Block, warm water at the ocean beaches, smaller crowds, but also back to school, back to work. Carefree August is behind us and grown up issues of Q4 and planning for 2016 are looming.

But not quite yet – am headed out now with rod in hand. Take every minute you can to get on or near the water during these beautiful September days!

And as always, if you can’t find your local copy of Coastal Angler Magazine be sure to subscribe! Our numbers are growing daily and you’ll see great new features coming this fall!
