The Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association (RISAA) was honored and recognized by the American Fisheries Society, Southern New England Chapter, during their 2013 Summer Meeting held at Roger Williams University on June 19.
A s most Rhody anglers know, RISAA is the Ocean State’s premier organization to provide a forum for anglers. It represents more than 6,500 saltwater anglers and affiliations. Its hard working members and always-on President Steve Medeiros are everywhere from charity events to forums to monthly meetings, shows, tournaments and more. They work with politicians, academics, fisherman, captains and the public to support sound management of fisheries resources and marine conservation and provide a unified voice to preserve and protect the rights, traditions and future of recreational fishing for all.
Their charitable arm, The RISAA Foundation is a nonprofit organization created to foster sportsmanship, to support marine conservation and the sound management of fisheries resources and more.
Together with Brewer Yacht Yards they host and run the state’s most loved event for underprivileged children, “Take a City Kid Fishing.” This event, held last Saturday at Brewers in East Greenwich, involved 69 captains, dozens of volunteers, many from the Brewer team and a lot of high-level coordination to bring roughly 200 children an amazing experience on the water. RISAA President Steve Medeiros was invited to attend and accept the award. The “Lesa Meng Aquatic Conservation Award” was presented because of RISAA’s work in marine conservation, improving sustainable fisheries, support of research agencies, and advocating for the future of recreational fishing.
