Waiting for the schoolies, thrills in Honduras, a year in the trenches and more…

Last month marks the second full year of publication for Coastal Angler Magazine Rhode Island. It’s been two great years of good fun, great seafood, and growth for us. We’ve added editorial staff, nurtured a small but growing band of advertisers and our paid subscribers list is growing. So, thanks for everything to you, our readers, and our team on the ground that make it all work. Keep those cards, letters and FaceBook posts coming!

For us, February is a month of keen anticipation. While we wait for the schoolies to show up in the spring we hit the boat and fishing shows, getting our gear in top shape and ready for the upcoming fishing season. The hard core – like our Editor-in-Chief Zach Harvey – will go after the cod this month, even in sub-arctic weather. Alas, I am not that brave.

It was so cold in January we just couldn’t put together an issue on ice-fishing for February, so we went the opposite way. As we discussed story options with our writers, we hit upon a few ideas, but there was real excitement when we told Tom Schlichter, Contributing Editor for our Long island edition, about our recent fishing trip to Honduras. We launched into a joyful conversation of hot days, big game fish and our recent trips, his to the Paradise Coast, FL and ours to Roatan, Honduras. We agreed that it would just be fun to share those trips and the insider tips we picked up along the way, pictures and all. While we love fishing hometown waters the best we hope you’ll excuse us this month.

Roatan has been on our bucket list for a while with world-class fishing and pristine waters far from the hustle and bustle on the mainland. A last minute deal and post-holiday exhaustion combined to allow for a quick trip in January. All I’ll say here is that Roantan is easier to get to than ever before with direct flights from Dallas, Atlanta and Miami, more cost effective than the mainland US once you get there, and the people are wonderful – more in our story in the following pages.

And back to the shows. Our Ocean State waters provide enormous biodiversity in terms of the fish stock. From the western beaches to the Bay to Block Island, the list romps along including scup, ’tog, black sea and striped bass, fluke, blues tuna on to the sharks and big game fish. Combine that with the quality of our charter captains, availability of world class gear and tackle, hospitality infrastructure and the gorgeous vistas of Narragansett Bay, Block Island and more… well, fishing here can’t be beat. RISAA, dedicated to the protection, promotion and preservation of recreational fishing, led by the legendary Steve Medeiros, puts on one of the country’s best fishing shows showcasing all that Rhode Island and the region have to offer. Join the thousands of anglers, dozens of exhibitors with the newest gear, a great roster of speakers and presenters, all sharing years of experience for a great time for all in Providence February 27 – March 1!

See you at the Show!
