Grand River Fishing Report: February 2015

Walleye in the Grand River is moving in and getting ready to spawn. February is my favorite month to fish for monster walleye. Find them by fishing the slack poles of water and the little eddies alongside the river. I like using Husky Jerks or X Raps in black and chrome, silver and blue, silver and chart. Or my personal go to silver and orange. Bucktail jigs and white twisters or paddle tails have to be in your arsenal.

When fishing use this route: start behind Charley’s Crab. I would cast about six feet off shore. When I’m bringing the bait back to me I would crank as SLOW as I could. The current is flowing so it’s moving your bait. Crank it four or five times and then jerk it. Then I would keep cranking….SLOW. And then when I bring it back in the next cast I made would be a couple feet from the last place I casted.

Work the water and if you don’t get a hit after 30 minutes, move! The west side of the Fulton Street Bridge is another popular spot. When you’re there, use bucktails and plastic. Throw close to the back and bring it back slow. Then work it from time to time. There are tons of walleye in front of the Amway and the boardwalk. Make sure you fish above Fulton on the east side. There’s a deep pocket in there that’s always overlooked. Walk up and down the river to find pocket water and fish it hard. It’s not uncommon to fish for 45 minutes and have your limit of walleye. It might be cold out, but if you are fishing you’ll have the river all to yourself. Take care and God Bless!
