[dropcap]W[/dropcap]e are coming off what has been one of the craziest springs we have had in a very long time. Look for the weather and the fishing in July to be HOT HOT HOT!!!. We had record low temps in May, and seemingly endless rain in June. July has the makings of one for the record books. All those fish that were NOT caught in May and June should be fat, happy and hungry. Early departures are almost a must for July. Big trout will be taking advantage of the cooler temps at first light and late in the evening. The big schools of mullet should start showing up, and with that comes the big specks and bull reds. Early morning top water baits should be good, but as the temps rise with the sun, switch to live bait (croaker, shrimp, mullet). The shell bottoms in the MS Sound and Chandelier sound should still hold plenty of fish. The best bites will still be on the days leading up before and after the full and new moons. The diving gulls should hold all the school-sized specks and white trout you could ever stand.
July will have some of the best shark and triple fishing we see all year long. Look for your sharks to be in the deeper water channels. A simple Carolina rig, with a 1 ounce sinker and some steel leader with a 4/0 circle hook with a big hunk of cut bait, will get the job done. Watch for any floating objects (buoy, trash, wood) to hold triple tail. Pitch them a live shrimp, and watch them eat!
The LA Marsh and Cat Island is where we will be, but the entire MS Gulf Coast will be full of fish. The reefs and bridges will still be loaded with fish all month long. Live bait, dead bait, and artificial bait will all get it done this month. Watch for storms, and bring plenty of drinking water. As always, have fun and be safe.
