Biscayne Bay/Flamingo Fishing Report: July 2014

[dropcap]J[/dropcap]uly is a great month for fishing in South Florida. Big snook make their way to the beaches and into local
Inlets. This is the start of their spawning activity for the year and big females will be accompanied by hundreds of little males. These fish will also be pushing their way up and down the beach forging on the summer baits we spoke about in last month’s report. Snook are usually targeted with your typical white bait in the southern region, or sardines to the north. Target these fish in the inlet with your typical 12 to 15 lb. Spinning rod, 5/0 circle hook and a 50 to 60 lb. fluorocarbon leader. Also mixed in with these fish will be some nice mangrove and cubera snappers. Adding a 1/4 ounce to a 1/2 ounce lead sinker, depending on the tide, will increase your shots at snapper.

Snook fishing in the Everglades is also on the rise. Big schools of fish will be posted on the outside islands, also stalking large schools of baitfish. Fishing early and late in the day will increase your chances of catching greater numbers. Most fish will be in the under slot range, but still tons of fun. Ten to 12lb. spinning rods are the staple with 30 to 40lb. fluorocarbon leader.

Available this month to the public is my new line of SaltH2oCustoms Rods ranging from inshore to offshore. You can check these rods out at Salt- H2o.com. Also available is the Crook and Crook Custom production line, a very nice selection of rods with the option to choose multiple colors. Check them out at Crook and Crook in Miami if you’re in the area or online at Tackletogo.com.

Hope the tide is high on your side…
