Catherine Jones caught this massive 11-pound, 3-ounce spotted seatrout on Nov. 20 from Pungo Creek, a tributary of the Pamlico River. It ate a live menhaden she was fishing from a dock.

Tuna Fetches $273,000 At Annual Tokyo New Year’s Auction, Breaking Pandemic Slump

A 467lb bluefin tuna sold for $273,000 at Tokyo’s annual New Year’s tuna auction held on January 5, 2023 at the Toyosu fish market. While the winning bid is just a fraction of 2019’s record price of 410.92 million yen (US$3.1 million), it is more than double the top price at last year’s auction, breaking a pandemic trend of slumping demand.

What’s That Fish?

This ugly character is a goblin shark. Featured in the USFWS’s Fish of the Week Podcast, the goblin shark is a deepwater species rarely encountered by humans. They exist in the cold darkness of 800- to 3,000-foot depths, where they hunt other weird deep-sea denizens like anglerfish and dragonfish in all the world’s oceans. They grow to 20 feet in length.

Mystics are one of the lesser-known grouper species, simply because anglers don’t fish deep enough to target them. Like all grouper, they are excellent to eat and usually weigh from 15 to 50 pounds, although they can grow much larger.

Two State Records In A Day!

Marovich caught a 5.56-pound red porgy that bested a 2019 record of 4.8 pounds. He also boated a big 10.55-pound blueline tilefish that smashed the 2021 record of 5.4 pounds.

D.A. Sea, a 65 Paul Mann run by Capt. Mark Stephens, won this year’s Chub Cay Invitational Tournament. The members-only event was held last month. D.A. Sea released four blue marlin to take home first-place honors. The Invitational is hosted by the popular Chub Cay Resort & Marina Club, located at the southern tip of the Berry Islands in the Bahamas.
