A field of 39 boats fished the Backcountry Fishing Association’s third tournament of the 2017 season on March 4 under very breezy conditions. Even with strong easterly winds anglers, were able to bring in the Indian River Lagoon snook, trout and redfish with artificial lures for cash prizes.
Solo angler Andy Fantini won first place and $682.50 for his 9.91-pound snook and 1.37-pound trout. The team of Dana Blackburn and Jamie Williams took second place and $409.50 for their 3.05-pound trout and a 6.32-pound snook. Third place was claimed by Zack Foltz and Loraé Simpson took third place with a 4.56-pound trout and a 2.96-pound redfish. They took home $273.00.
The biggest snook Calcutta prize of $330.00 went to Troy and Taylor Wilson with a 7.15-pound fish. The Calcutta was a rollover jackpot from last month. The duo also placed fourth overall. The biggest redfish Calcutta prize, $160.00, went to Darren Frost and Dustin Bragman with a 4.09-pound redfish. They also placed fifth place overall with a 2.23-pound trout.
The Backcountry Fishing Association is an artificial lure only tournament series which will wind up with a two-day Classic in October for the chance to win a 14-foot Billfish Boatworks skiff, motor and trailer. The next tournament is scheduled for April 1.
