April brings the best springtime fishing to the Treasure Coast. The winter storms have passed, and the offshore waters are turning crystal clear and warming up along the Gulf Stream. Mutton and mangrove snapper are schooling along our shores and reefs, and slab sized mahi-mahi are ready to take the bait in the deep blue.
There will be plenty of mutton and mangrove snappers jousting for space around the reefs and around bottom structure, particularly off the Fort Pierce coast. Schooling around bottom structure and wrecks, these snappers have picked the perfect spots for breaking off lines, and one too many brake-offs and the bite will shut down.
This challenge makes snapper a worthy opponent for both greenhorn and old salt, and one of our favorite targets along the Treasure Coast.
While dropping in on the snapper take the opportunity to chum up some magnificent mahi action! April is a great time to reel in a big mahi, so rig up your big-guns and head toward the deep blue. Look for sargassum “weed-lines” floating along the edge of currents.
The shade of these seaweed rafts provides protection and nutrition for juvenile fish which in turn makes it a hot spot for big mahi’s prowling in the deep. Rig up some frozen ballyhoo or live-bait and troll along the edge of weed-line, and if you manage to keep your line out of the weeds, the bite is be guaranteed!
Take advantage of the best weather of the year, and fill up your icebox for some magnificent mutton, mangroves, mahi -tacos served up with fresh mango salsa in paradise!
