The Dark ’n Stormy® was invented in the British Mess in Dockyard. The British Navy were big fans of the Gosling’s Black Seal Rum. They made their own ginger beer and mixed the Black Seal rum with the ginger beer to invent the Dark ’n Stormy.
The Dark ’n Stormy name is said to come from a sailor once holding the glass aloft the with the Gosling’s Black Seal Rum and ginger beer, and pronouncing it to be “the colour of a cloud that only a fool or a dead man would sail under”. The timeframe of this cocktail invention by the British Navy is in the early 1920s.
This is a trademarked cocktail. Gosling’s has a U.S. Patent Trademark on this cocktail name. The official trademark says that Gosling’s Black Seal Rum must be used in a Dark ’n Stormy cocktail. Everything else is a fake & phony. Not authentic.
The reason why it is important to have a trademark for this cocktail is to ensure consistency of the taste of this cocktail.
While there are many different ginger beers on the market, the key ingredient is the Black Seal Rum. We would not want any consumers to try a Dark ’n Stormy which does not use the award-winning Black Seal rum and not enjoy it, like it. FYI, Gosling’s Black Seal Rum won the highest award in the industry, the prestigious Platinum Medal, scoring 96 points.
