Kayak Fishing Forecast – July 2017

The kingfish bite has been on fire since the end of June. Kayak anglers have caught kingfish ranging from 15 lbs to 40 lbs. Most, if not all the hot kingfish bites are taking place in 80 to 150 feet of water off Pompano Beach. Some of the big kings have been caught in 80 feet of water, straight out in front of the Pompano Pier on live gogs.

Anglers are still jigging up some blackfin tuna here and there along with the occasional jumbo. Pink and purple colored jigs seem to be the color of preference. Wreck fishing will be very good this month with monster amberjacks and the occasional big mutton caught over the deep wrecks from 180-250 feet of water. My biggest amberjacks have been caught on the glow in the dark tiger jigs and green jigs. For the big muttons, drop a big tasty gog or big pilchard down deep and make sure you have at least 20 ft of 50 to 60 lb fluorocarbon leader.

The mahi mahi bite will be solid in July, with some big fish caught in 250-300 feet of water. Look for the weed lines and troll up and down them for best results.

On an outgoing tide, the wahoo have been feeding right out in front of the Hillsboro Lighthouse. 20 to 30 pounders will be caught around the right moons in bunches. For you kayakers that are hunting your prize wahoo, an outgoing morning tide is most efficient. Your set up should consist of a reel that can hold at least 300 yards of line, small swivels or none at all, and 50 lb mono connected to wire leader measuring 7 to 9 inches. Don’t forget to attach your stinger rig!
