Sebastian Area Offshore Fishing Forecast: February 2017

Cobia should be on the fishing scene this month. PHOTO CREDIT: Rogue Wave Fishing.

Kingfishing remains strong about 10 miles north of the inlet. The area the fish are being caught in is called “The Pines.”  You can find this area on any local chart. The commercial kingfish boats are allowed 50 fish per day and many of them catch their quota by 12:00 noon. The commercial guys will troll a spoon with a strip of poggy attached to the hook. A good speed to target them is 5- to 7-knots. We like to use live bait also. If you can find threadfin herrings on the beach, you’re in there!  We may also hit one of the artificial reefs for live blue runners. Hook the live baits on stinger rigs with #7 wire. You can either slow troll with your live bait or anchor up and cast out your live bait.

Keep a sharp eye out for cobia as the month progresses. Often the cobia can be spotted on the surface near turtles, following manta rays or just swimming along near the surface. Once you find a cobia, be as stealthy as possible, as you pull up near the fish from behind. Cast a live bait about five feet in front of it, so you don’t spook it. Make sure your drag is set good and use a strong hook.

Last year we crushed the dolphin in March so watch for the dolphin bite to really pick up later this month. Head out to the Gulf Stream and search for all the likely targets (i.e. weed lines, rips and temperature breaks).
