[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ay is a transitional period from Florida’s windy season to the calmer boating season. Although there will still be frequent afternoon sea breezes, they will be short lived and often not very strong. Kiters with light wind equipment and foil boards will still find some good sessions on the water. Those with properly equipped boats may chase the wind over to the Bahamas, while others fly to some exotic destination.
For kiteboarders staying local, the best summer wind will usually take place sometime between 2 p.m. and sunset. On most days, the wind will not exceed 15 knots, so light wind equipment will be needed. For your local summer “quiver of gear” I recommend a 13-meter or larger kite, a 145-centimeter or larger twin tip board, a foil board, or a large directional board depending on your weight and ability. It is a kiter’s responsibility to determine what is right for them in various weather conditions.
If you will be taking advantage of the calmer seas and heading to the Bahamas this season, there are some great opportunities for summer kiting. Most of the stronger wind will be found on the southern outer islands. Typically, the islands south of Marsh Harbour will produce the best afternoon breeze. There are some really great sand bars to explore as well. I recommend that there be a chase boat available to provide support if needed. There are many currents and unexpected hazards so be extra cautious in the Bahamas. I also recommend hiring a guide who can navigate and introduce you to the area. When I visit the Bahamas, I enjoy fishing and diving all morning and then finish off the day with a kite session on one of the many shallow sand bars.
If you will be jet setting, the Caribbean offers many opportunities. Most of the islands starting from the Dominican Republic all the way south to the coast of Venezuela will offer great kiting opportunities with a very high chance of wind. Every island chain has a different wind pattern but most of them will have wind through the entire summer. If you are looking for a “kitecation” stateside, a drive up to Cape Hatteras, NC, will usually not disappoint. This is a preferred destination by many kiters as it offers both flat water and wave riding opportunities. This is a recommended location for kiters of varying abilities.
As always, be safe, ask questions, and know your limits especially when traveling to new areas.
Have a great summer!
