The mullet run has started and if you never fished a mullet run before, this is the time to do so. Schools of mullet make their way down the beach and into the river. This is the time to catch a lot of snook, tarpon, big jacks, and big sharks. Look for the bait and you will find the fish. You will see tarpon and snook jumping out of the water getting ready for winter by filling up on these mullet. The best tactic is to fish just outside of the school, don’t throw your bait or lure in the school, these fish are looking for easy prey. I like to use a 8-foot Blackfin rod with a Penn 5500 spooled with 65-pound Spiderwire tied to 80-pound pink Ande mono leader to get these in fast and not lose them. I throw big plugs like Mangum Yo-Zuri crystal minnows, Daiwa SPS and Rapala XPS all in black and silver.  Snook will be big, some up to 30-pounds. Fish first light or at dark. Tarpon will be big, some up to 150-pounds so use big stuff, not light tackle. You want to release them safe. Throw your bait or lure just right outside of the school.

Save the date! Happy Bait Snook Tournament, Captains meeting on September 9, 2016, 6 p.m. at Pirates Cove Marina, Port Salerno.
