Abaco Offshore Fishing Forecast – February 2012

January turned out to be an excellent month offshore. The beginning had lots of glassy days with the wind from the north and west allowing for some fabulous days offshore. The Schooner Bay team enjoyed a New Year’s Eve near-shore spear fishing outing with lots of small reef fish for the table! Despite the water being cool this time of year, the rewards for the brave few that venture in can be well worth it! February will see an increased frequency of cold fronts and briefer windows on the east side of the island so it will be important to remain flexible with your options and take advantage of the increasing daylight hours. Both wahoo and small dolphin were reported in abundance along the eastern side of the Abacos from the cays all the way down to Schooner Bay, with red skirts the most popular choice. The wahoo bite should stay strong and the number and size of the dolphin should increase. Both marlin and sailfish will pick up in frequency in the coming month, reminding us that your choice of tackle should be varied to accommodate whatever you may run into. We encourage you to fish sustainably, tomorrow is another day!
