Abaco Offshore Fishing Forecast – October 2011

The red snapper bite is strong and should continue well into October.

Everyone in Abaco (or thinking of heading to Abaco) is looking forward to the coming change in season. September is typically slow so you know that everyone is excited about putting the summer behind them. Capt. Justin Russell of Hope Town reported some nice catches during the latter part of September including some dolphin, wahoo (a couple to 30 pounds) and tuna. Treasure Cay Resort and Marina’s Cliff Bootle shared that while September has been slow, October should show more wahoo and occasional sailfish. With trolling action being quiet, most hardcore anglers are reef and bottom fishing. The red snapper and yelloweye snapper bite is strong and should continue well into October along with a great supply of grouper. The fish are in relatively shallow water at around 150 to 175 feet. An occasional amberjack or kingfish will also bend a rod from time to time. It won’t be long until cool fronts will begin to emerge from the U.S. east coast and signal the migration of pelagic species in earnest. The cooling water temperature is what starts the move. So for October, the offshore menu will be some dolphin and tuna with increases of wahoo catches and some tasty snapper and grouper! You may have to work a little harder but what’s better than being in the Abacos!
