Grand Bahama Inshore Fishing Forecast – March 2012

The sharks and barracudas will hit the popper, but I recommend you use a steel leader tip.

February is normally cool, and the temperature on the flats is cooler. But this February is not as cool as it normally would be in East Grand Bahama, so the flats are not as cool. As a result, the bonefish are back in the outer flats and creeks. Also, other fish, like barracuda, shark, permit and mutton snapper are back out as well. To fly fish for bonefish, we recommend that you use an 8-weight fly rod with a nine foot, ten to twelve pound test leader. The flies you use should be 4 to 6 inches; some of those I recommend are Crazy Charlie, Flat Fly, Mantis Shrimp, and Gotcha, in tan, brown and pink. For permit, I would recommend using a 10 to12 weight rod with a 12 to 15 pound test leader; a permit crab fly is a good fly to use. On spinning gear, recommendations are a live or artificial crab. For mutton snapper on a fly rod, you can use the same 10-12 weight, with a 15 to16 pound test leader; my choice of fly would be a Bobble Head Popper. The sharks and barracudas will hit the popper, but I recommend you use a steel leader tip. On the spinning rod, you can use a topwater lure or live shrimp; try using a tube lure for barracuda.
