Trout continue to bite despite the high water and hot water temperatures. Our September 12th trip brought us 84.5 degrees and a rain shortened trip but it still couldn’t stop us from netting 9 fish including one over 21”. Not too shabby.

Our water has been very dark due to the amount of water coming o the hill. You can’t fish near the mouth of the rivers and major creeks here due to the turbidity and the overly fresh conditions. This means the waters closer to Keaton have held the best clarity and the better fishing.

My charters continue to catch our trout on live pinfish rigged under Back Bay Thunders in depths of three to five and a half feet of water. I can’t emphasize enough how essential the loud pop of your Cajun Thunder or Back Bay Thunder is! These dark water conditions command that noise is the primary sense these fish are using to find their prey. Remember: You can rig up with artificials under your thunders, just use shorter leaders for more light penetration and more strikes in this dark water for October.

October will still hold some fine live bait fishing for trout and reds while the cooler water temps, later in the month, should begin to provide decent topwater and hard jerkbait plug fishing. Fish Bite-A-Bait fighters in Clown, Parrot and Chrome for larger trout in October. Remember to extend and exaggerate the pause with your plugs in the darker water for more hook-ups.

For topwater enthusiasts, use MirrOlure’s Top Dogs, She Dogs and the new C85MR Pro Dogs with C-Eyes in seven exciting new colors! 11SB, CHSB, GCSB, HPSB, Trout BPT and Red: I can’t wait to try mine when the floating grass goes away!

Redfish continue to be few and far between as of late, but schooling fish will be more abundant in October. Be on the lookout for large schools of outsized, over-the-slot bulls. Have a couple of rods ready with heavier leaders for when the charge is on!

Let’s Go Fishing!
