Lake Oconee Fishing Report: April 2014

By Reeltime Guide Services

Linesides: Striper fishing on Lake Oconee in April is nothing short of great. Stripers and hybrids will be stacked up at the dam and also making their way up the rivers to spawn. Lake Oconee is one of the few lakes in the country where the stripers and hybrids stack up at the dam. You do not have to take a long boat ride to start fishing, and you do not have to ride all over the lake looking for fish. There are three main methods for catching these fish. One is on downlines with live shad or shiners. Another is with flatlines using the same shiners and shad. The third way is with a Capt. Mack’s umbrella rig. I use a four-arm , nine-jig rig pulled 100 feet behind the boat at 3 mph.

Crappie: Crappie fishing will also be very good during the month of April. The two most popular methods are spider rigs, us- ing jigs tipped with a crappie minnow, and trolling with small jigs. Use your Lowrance to locate the schools in the major creeks and coves off the main lake. When you see fish on the Lowrance, start fishing. April is one of if not the best month of the year to go fishing. Spring is in full swing, and all the fish are feeding. It is also a great time to take a child fishing, as the action should be good most of the day.
