Nassau Offshore Fishing Forecast – March 2012

There has been a lot of seaweed around, and along these weed lines there will be dolphin and some smaller wahoo underneath feeding on the baitfish seeking shelter from the bigger fish.

Even though the wahoo bite was fantastic the last few months, it has recently slowed up a bit; we are still catching a few, though. Sure to replace the wahoo bite in Nassau waters is dolphin, which are great fun to catch and excellent table fare. There has been a lot of seaweed around, and along these weed lines there will be dolphin and some smaller wahoo underneath feeding on the baitfish seeking shelter from the bigger fish; there will also be stray tuna in the area.

We have been heading offshore after the tide changes to the flood tide, and looking for birds, weed lines and any floating debris to find these fish in numbers. Trolling around 7 to 8 knots with any plastic lure, ballyhoo, or your favorite lure, skipping on the surface, will surely get their attention. Keep your wire rigs close by, because if you come across floating debris there might be some juvenile wahoo around mixed with the dolphin. We usually troll with some soft plastic lures (chuggers), mixed with a ballyhoo and a daisy chain teaser; we use monofilament for our main leader for flexibility, because these fish jump and jump, and the mono doesn’t kink. Bright colored lures of your choice are good, but make sure you have one or two dark ones in the mix until you figure out what they’re hitting.

Since there has been a lot of small dolphin showing up, there might be a billfish or two in the mix; you never know what you will find when trolling in the vast waters of the Atlantic around Nassau. So tight lines everybody; there is great fishing in Nassau!
