Each summer, Friends of the Environment reaches out to communities in North, Central and South Abaco to provide interactive environmental summer camp experiences for local youths. By integrating engaging indoor lessons with hands-on outdoor activities and field trips, FRIENDS is able to provide a fun and educational experience during summer camp that helps to raise campers’ appreciation for the environment and help turn them into better stewards for Abaco. Summer Camp is one of the most important components of FRIENDS’ Education Program as it allows kids to truly get hands on with their environment, while learning how they can incorporate conservation measures into their daily lives.

Many of our young Bahamians have not yet learned to swim, so FRIENDS helps campers learn to float and swim so that they will have the opportunity to partake in field trips to Mermaid Reef near Marsh Harbour and the famous Sawmill Sink blue hole in South Abaco. The excited exclamations of a camper seeing a coral reef for the very first time are not to be forgotten! Experiences like this provide lasting memories that connect campers to their environment.

Reach out to your young anglers; spend time with them to share your joy for fishing and teach them about the environment and sustainable fishing practices so that they may always be able to enjoy the sport and can one day pass on the tradition.
