Mays’ Surf Fishing was slow with dirty water on many of our Brevard County Beaches. However, I did see good numbers of bait fish caught during the month and that is a good sign that predators are close at hand.

So I suggest that during this time one carry a 7-9 foot medium heavy action rod in addition to the normal surf tackle on fishing outings. Use the rod with a reel spooled with 20 lb test braided fishing line. Slide a 2 or 3 oz barrel sinker onto the running line followed by an 8mm bead and tie to a swivel. To the swivel tie 12-16 inches of 30/45 lb test mono and at the end a 3/0 to 5/0 strong circle hook. Hook fresh caught live spot or grunt thru the upper lip and cast it into the trough and wait for the bite. Snook, sharks and redfish are roaming the trough and you never know what you might catch.

So adjust your tactics to meet the changing environment and fishing conditions. Shrimp and clams will be the best baits.Next month will discuss how to keep the crabs from eating the bait off the hooks. Very frustrating to reel in your surf rig only to find the hooks bare and you didn’t see the rod move.

I suggest that some excellent fishing days lie ahead of us this summer. Fishing on the beaches and in the lagoon is excellent this time of year. Adam and I have had 100 fish days on the river and great mornings and evenings in the surf. Change your times, baits, tactics, the way you hold your mouth and go for it.
