Abaco Flats Fishing Forecast – December 2012

December is one of my favorite months for bonefishing. The cooler water and air temperatures are just right, bringing in plenty of fish all over, both large and small. Wading the flats in shallow water and seeing those big bone tails up in the air just feeding away can get you excited. With the water temperature cooler, we fish flats that are closer to the deep water. You will see schools of fish but at low tide, they will be tailing and feeding. At high tide you will see more single and double bonefish together.

For bonefish, try a an 8-weight fly rod with 10ft. 10lb. test leader using No.6 flies, medium tan colors or even light pink—Gotcha, Pink Puffs and Crazy Charlie’s—live bait will work as well. For permit and tarpon, try a heavy fly rod with a 12 to 15lb. test leader. If targeting barracuda and shark, be sure to use a wire leader.

On the flats you also have a chance to snag mutton snapper, tarpon, permit, barracuda and sharks. If your target is barracuda or sharks, use a heavy rod with at least a 25-to-30 pound test line and a wire leader.

If you’re in the Abaco’s, give me a call!
