In October, the water temperature begins to cool off a bit, so you will see more schools of smaller fish going back up into the creeks. These smaller fish, which are in the 1 to 3 pound size range, are easier to catch due to their size. Out on the flats that are closer to deep water you will still see the schools of bigger 6 to 8 pounders on the flats. Once the water temperature drops a little more, the bigger fish will start to move onto the flats in the creeks.
Tackle to use for bonefish is 8-weight fly rod, with 10-pound 10-foot leader. No. 6 flies light-medium tan or light pink color’s. With a spin rod you should use a 6-foot long rod and artificial or live bait on a hook.
On the deeper flats, you will also have chances at catching barracuda, sharks, tarpon and permit. For these bigger fish, we recommend a heavier rod: 10-weight fly rod with 12 to 15 pound test leader at least 10 foot long. To catch tarpon or permit, user a bigger fly than you would use for a bonefish. For barracuda and shark, you’ll need a wire leader with a trolling feather.
