Bimini Dive Forecast – September 2012

Spotted dolphin at play in the gin clear water of Bimini.

The diving and snorkeling weather in Bimini during September is near perfect, with little or no wind and the seas are usually calm. The air temperature averages between 85° and 95° and the water temperature is in the mid 80’s. It is mating season for the reef sharks so no shark dives! The sharks seem to disappear around this time every year and don’t reappear until late October. The visibility averages 80 plus feet.

My favorite dive site is the Bimini Barge. This is a shipwreck that sits in about 95 feet of water and was sunk approximately 25 years ago as a part of the artificial reef program. Thus far, it has been a complete success. Over 100 different species of marine life have “moved in” and now reside on the wreck, including but not limited to sharks, grouper, permit, jacks, stingrays and more, depending on the time of year. There is significant coral growth on the structure, which is about 180 feet long. Depending on the tidal movement, there can be up to a two and one-half knot current on the wreck. Located right outside of the Bimini Channel, this dive site is only a 10 minute boat ride from the dive shop. A definite “must do” for the advanced and /or experienced diver.
