When Florida gets a cold front, The Biminis sneeze! During January a number of strong cold fronts came through and the water temperature dropped, but this is nothing new. The flats fishing in Bimini is still spectacular with lots of catching and not just fishing. With the cooler water temperatures, you will want to fish in the mid-afternoons on a moving tide after the sun has warmed the shallow water on the flats and the fish come up from the deeper water to feed. The bones are good size and the larger fish will be singles and doubles and the schools will be smaller. With the persistence of cold fronts through February, the casting skill to deal with windy conditions is important. You may need to find some protection from the wind along the mangrove lined shore. February and March are great months for fishing for permit in Bimini waters. These great fighters should range from 20 to 30 pounds. Snapper, grouper, triggerfish and more are abundant on the nearshore reefs and make for great table fare. The fish are hungry so plan your next trip to Bimini soon.
