Bimini Offshore Fishing Forecast – January 2012

January means there will be plenty of wahoo and some really big ones! PHOTO CREDIT: Capt. Billy Black.

January will bode well for the angler headed to the Bahamas island nearest to the U.S. mainland. There should be plenty of wahoo and some really big ones! As the month progresses, there will be more dolphin and sailfish showing up. My suggestions for best baits are to use small trolling ballyhoo or small lures. Good colors are pink, green and yellow and blue and white. When fishing ballyhoo, use 5/0 circle hooks. That will make it easier to release small dolphin and sailfish. Watch your flatline because there are blue marlin off the Biminis year round. They will be holding in the warm Gulf Stream waters. If you want to specifically target blues, use a larger lure on the flatline. Choices would be a black and purple Billy Black 694 slant-head lure.

As always, there is great deep dropping off the edge in 600 to 700 feet of water. You will find plenty of yelloweye snapper, black snapper and grouper (remember Nassau grouper season is closed). Good baits are cut barracuda or squid. My favorite bait for big grouper is fresh conch.

See you in Bimini for some great fishing!
