Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon should be HOT in March if for no other reason than it’s been HOT almost all winter. Yes, there have been a few days where fishing has been less than stellar, but that is fishing; it happens!

It’s no longer winter in March; however March’s weather is still a long way from what I call spring. I fully expect it to be windy with cold fronts moving through our area. With a little luck these fronts will not be severe enough to ruin our good bite.

If water temperatures continue to stay in the mid sixty degree range we’ll enjoy hungry and aggressive fish on the shallows. This pattern will only change if we experience an extended run of cold and nasty weather.

Some days we’ve been finding redfish and black drum schooling in big numbers only to find them scattered about the next. The good news here is once we find them they’ve been eager to eat.

As usual soft plastic lures have been gracing our hooks and the two lures doing the most damage to Mr. Redfish’s and Ms. Trout’s lips have been the Exude Dart and the Banks Lures Flats Creeper. Both of these lures can be used as a search bait or finesse bait depending on how the angler manipulates them.

I’m excited to say we’ve been catching a lot of “rat” reds this winter. No, I’m not bragging on catching little fish. I’m stating we seem to have a bumper crop of two and three year old fish which in time will become trophies. It takes thousands of the little ones to grow hundreds of mature fish and I’m happy to see so many dink trout and redfish this year!
