South Eleuthera Dive Forecast – October 2012

October is still part of the “off-season” here is south Eleuthera with the level of tourism on the island at a minimum. Because we are in the off-season, there are fewer folks diving. This gives those who do venture to South Eleuthera the impression of experiencing a private dive charter on every dive. The water temperature in October continues to be 82 to 85 degrees and wet suits are still optional. October is the transition month between the summer and winter weather pattern, we see an increase in the number of days with the winds being more north-northeasterly, but they are typically light. As the winds become more north-northeasterly, the water temperature starts to drop and the visibility begins to significantly increase and is rarely below 100 feet. Humidity is down compared to late July through September; the sun is lower in the sky and the sunsets incredible.

October is the time to start looking for the large pelagic species down on the walls, such as the large spotted eagle rays. If you like to do exploration diving, October is a great month with predictable weather and calm days allowing for “wall swim-drift dives”, where you do a free decent in 60 feet of water and follow the wall with a very modest current, or swim along the wall if there is no current, scouting for a dive site you get to name. As we say here, “South Eleuthera diving is indeed the best kept secret in the Caribbean”. If you are truly seeking a diving adventure, a little off the beaten path that you will never forget, check out South Eleuthera. You will not be disappointed.
