STA-SEAS NATURE COAST ADVENTURES

STA-SEAS NATURE COAST ADVENTURES

Here we are again, anticipating these cooler temperatures coming up. I for one, am so excited.  This is the time of year that the fishing goes from good, to outstanding!  The water starts to cool, and the tides get lower. I always seem to have the best luck on the outgoing tide These cooler temps bring the fish closer to shore. You can find them all around the islands, mangroves, oyster beds and the grass flats.  We have been suffering through 100 degree temps for months now.  Even a 10 degree drop makes all the difference in the world. I went fishing yesterday morning in the backwaters of Crystal River, and the temperature in the morning was 60 degrees. I almost needed a sweatshirt. I decided to try some top-water and from the 1st cast to the last, it was non-stop action.  I started at 7:00 a.m. and was home by noon. We easily caught our limit of trout, but just kept enough for dinner. The blow-ups on the top water are so exhilarating.  I love to fish with live bait, but there are some days when the fish are in the mood to chase their prey.  Top-water lures can be very frustrating if you do not work them properly. I was using a Heddon super spook, which is one of my favorites.  Grab one of those or something similar, and cast and retrieve, making it a back-and-forth action.  You make short twitches of the rod while slowly reeling. This technique is called walking the dog.  If you have never used this technique, it is time to try. It is a little intimidating at first, but once you master it, the blow-ups will make your heart start racing and you won’t want to stop.  I am warning you; it is very addictive! I have found that the beginning of the outgoing tide, with just a small breeze makes for perfect conditions to throw top-water.  There are so many options when buying top- water plugs. I always look for ones that have noisemakers, for instance, a rattle. We’ve always been told to shhhhhhh while fishing but with top-water, the louder the better! Get out there and fish. Tight lines my friends.
