Brevard Inshore/Offshore Fishing Report

Nice sized Cobia caught off Cape Canaveral
Nice sized Cobia caught off Cape Canaveral

Offshore & Nearshore Fishing:
Anglers that got out over the weekend did very well. This includes the Pelican Flats, the Pines off Sebastian, the Party Grounds — pretty much every place that has got bait on it has king mackerel, sharks, and bonito. There’s a surprising amount of sailfish running around in the 70 – 90 ft depth range chasing the bait pods. We caught one fishing Cape Canaveral yesterday between 50 – 55 lbs. Just keep your eye out for the bait pods and you’ll see the activity around them.

There’s also quite a few cobia showing up in the 40 to 60 ft depths. Check all of the shoal areas around the tip of the Cape and some of the wrecks that are down south off Sebastian that are in water of 60ft of water or less. They’ll hit jigs, live crabs, and live menhaden, so make sure you have several types of baits on board with you.

Tripletail has been productive out of Canaveral. There’s also some fish on the shipping channel and the shoals down outside sebastian.

Inshore Fishing:
In the Indian and Banana River Lagoons, the trout bite has been fair. There’s been some slot sized fish that are around the Melbourne area, from the Melbourne causeway south to the Vero area. A lot of the spoil islands and shores with a lot of mangrove cover have been holding the largest numbers of fish. Topwater plugs, jerk baits, live mullet, pigfish and pinfish have been working well.

For Mosquito lagoon fishing, go with topwater plugs early, then switch to live pigfish or cut baits later in the day. That’s how you’ll get the trout and redfish up there. There’s plenty of fish all through the lagoons.
