Fishing Forecast: Port Canaveral

Anglers will continue to have multiple species they can target outside of the Port this month. Tarpon are probably the most acrobatic yet hardest fish of the bunch for anglers to land. Tarpon average 75 to 120-pounds, but can grow to over 150-pounds. Long, drag burning runs, huge leaps, and mule-like stubbornness when pressure is applied displays highlights this species is world renowned for. Fighting one of these monsters will truly rank at the top of your list when someone asks you “what you did on your summer vacation?” Spinner sharks are another high ƒflying game-fish that will be available this month. They average 40 to 150-pounds. Bonito, kingfish, jack, and cobia will round out the species list for anglers slow trolling or driŠfting with live pogies, or other lively bait sh in the 15 to 65-foot depths. Mangrove snapper, snook and flounder will be possible inside the turning basins of the Port. Snook are not in season and must be released, but they are usually great fun to catch. Look for them around the lighted docks at night or by the bridge fenders, and rock jetties at either end of the Port. Live baitfish and shrimp are best to use at any time of day or night for snook but they will hit sub surface plugs on occasion. Lipped diving plugs such as the Rapala X-Rap series are good nighttime lure options. Mangrove snapper will hit live shrimp, finger mullet or small bait sh such as pin sh around rocks and under lighted dock pilings throughout the Port at night. Anglers looking for flounder on the sandy drop-offs in the basins of the Port may find them when using live baits such as mud minnows, finger mullet, or shrimp on ¼ to ½-ounce HookUp jig heads.
